Choosing Safer Cleaning Products for Schools

Schools have a hard balance to strike. Classrooms, cafeterias, and bathrooms need to be genuinely clean and germ-free, because germs spread fast when kids share space all day. At the same time, the products used to get there are being used around children, often on the same desks and tables kids touch and eat on. The goal is real cleaning and disinfecting power with the lowest possible exposure to harsh chemicals.

What to Look For

  • EPA registration for any disinfecting claim. If a product says it kills germs or viruses, it should carry an EPA registration number. That number means the kill claims have been tested and verified, not just printed on the label.
  • A safer active ingredient. Products built around citric acid do the job without the harsh profile of older chemistries. Look at what the product is actually made of, not just the marketing on the front.
  • No rinse required on food-contact surfaces. Cafeteria tables and lunchroom counters are food-contact surfaces. A no-rinse food-contact sanitizer saves a step and keeps things simple for staff.
  • Low fumes and no harsh smell. Kids and staff with asthma or sensitivities do better with products that do not fill a room with strong odors.

What to Avoid

Many traditional disinfectants are built on bleach, chlorine, QUATS, or thymol. These work, but they come with strong fumes, residue, and handling concerns that are not ideal around children. A growing number of facilities are moving away from them, which we cover in why facilities are moving away from QUATS. For schools, the case for a gentler chemistry is even stronger.

A Citric Acid Approach for Classrooms and Cafeterias

The LEXX® Broad Spectrum Disinfectant & Cleaner is EPA-registered (#91452-6), kills 99.99 percent of bacteria and viruses on hard surfaces in one minute, and is built around citric acid. It is free from bleach, ammonia, QUATS, and thymol, and needs no PPE to use, which makes it a practical fit for desks, door handles, and shared surfaces. It is available on Amazon.

For cafeteria tables and any food-contact surface, the LEXX® Food Contact Surface Sanitizer & Cleaner kills 99.999 percent of foodborne bacteria in one minute with no rinse required, and carries NSF Category A1 and D2 listings. It is available on Amazon too.

For everyday wipe-downs of non-food surfaces, the LEXX® General Multi-Purpose Cleaner handles desks, glass, and fixtures and is available on Amazon.

Build a Simple, Repeatable Routine

The best cleaning program for a school is one the staff will actually follow. Clean first to remove visible dirt, then sanitize or disinfect the surfaces that need it. Using products from one compatible line keeps the chemistry consistent so there is no risk of a bad mix between steps.
